23º 8.544' N106º 16.608' WShawnigan Sailed off the hook from east anchorage on Isla Isabel and headed 330 * North toward Mazatlan. With about 90 miles to travel we planned an overnight passage. We drifted the first 3 hours. Then the wind barely filled in, but enough to commit to sailing on. Early afternoon the wind picked up to a more steady 4-8 knots out of the NW. We saw tons of sea turtles. By nightfall we'd barely gone 25 miles but the wind kept up. Over the night there were a few drifting moments, but for the most part we had enough wind to cover 40 miles. The wind slowly switched out of the west and even the south for a little bit. We saw even more sea turtles, probably a total count of over 40. On the way in to Mazatlan we were cruising with winds up to 12-15 over our port beam. We dropped the hook on the East Side of Deer Island @ 1600. 23*14.238 N , -106*27.679 Walmost 7 years  agoShow

21º 36.51' N105º 31.638' WShawniganSail to Isla Isabel: left San Blas at 0515. Buddy boating with Mike in SV Easy. Ellamae with papa. Motored 1.5 hours out then sailed with offshore winds until about 1030, we got to fly the kite. Then we Drifted for a bit. Around 11:30 the wind switched to NW. The typical close reached toward Isla Isabel. We sailed until 5:30. Then motored 2 hours to the island to get there before sunset. We ended up anchoring at the east anchorage. Flat and beautiful and calm. Anchored in 27 feet on Sandy bottom, near pinnacles. We got to snorkel a lot and we explored the island. It was awesome to see all the nesting Boobies and Frigates. 21 60.891N , 105 52.715W almost 7 years  agoShow

21º 9.798' N105º 13.692' WShawniganWe left Punta de Mita around 0815. We motored (shhh don't tell anyone ;-) ) around the point to find no wind until about 1130! Buddy boating with us was Mike on SV Easy. The wind mostly blew around 5 knots and maybe reached 8 at one point. A beautiful sail the rest of the way to Chacala until about 3 o'clock when the wind died again. Thankfully we only had to motor an hour that time. We saw lots of sea turtles along the way. The sea itself was pretty flat. We dropped the anchor in 30 feet of water and set up a stern anchor as well. Chacala is protected from the northerlies and even northwest winds, but the swell sneaks in here, making it a rocky rolly anchorage. We are sitting pretty though with our stern anchor. Much calmer than La Cruz anchorage! Oh, and we managed to have time to surf! almost 7 years  agoShow

20º 26.916' N105º 13.386' WShawniganHad an epic 32 hour windward sail up from Chamela to La Cruz. We initially sailed off the hook but lost wind 5 minutes later, so we motored 20 minutes just to get us out of the bay and in to wind. We had great winds the rest of the day ranging from 5-8, then later 10-15 with a few gusts of 18. We reefed our main for a few of those 15-18 hours. Sailed full sail over night maintaining enough wind to sail an average of 4 knots, with a few lulls here and there. Sea state was the calmest we've seen it around Cabo Corrientes. Moon waxing toward at 1/4. Bioluminescence was abundant. Christian and I split the night for watches. I took the first. We tacked out as far as 18 miles offshore at one point. Out and up, out and up. 32 hours later we arrived in the La Cruz anchorage! almost 7 years  agoShow

19º 34.932' N105º 7.944' WShawniganFinally left La Cruz after 2 months of being anchored there. We sailed off the hook from the anchorage at 13:00 local time. Great winds out, blowing about 20 from Punta Mita out past Cabo Corrientes. We turned south a few miles off the point and set out windwane and sails for down wind wing on wing. We were a few miles sun of the point, about Punta Ipala at sunset. Christian took first watch and had us under double reefed main and jib furled in to ~70. We hit speeds of 13 downwind and wave, average of 7 kts. We held course until 0100, when we turned east and had the wind over our port beam. We stayed 20-16 miles off shore, so our wind stayed with us until about 3 am as we neared 10 miles offshore (west). We anchored in Chamela, Punta Perula, by 0530. Not too shabby of a sail for our first overnight in a very long time. about 7 years  agoShow
