Tonga towards Fiji Day 2

First day is done and we are already about a third way through this relatively short passage. The forecast was for 20 knots throughout the night but the winds weakened to about 15 at midnight. The swell from this angle mad for a very rolly night.

Everyone is well

Day 5 of passage from LHI To New Zealand

We are about 100 miles from NZ, though we still have about another 100 to Opua. Not the most comfortable for the last 2 days, sailing close to the wind but we are getting there.

All is well

Wind has picked up a bit but forward of the beam which makes it a little uncomfortable. Tomorrow the wind is forecast to be straight from where we need to be so we are going to head south off our course.

All is well

Day 1 of passage from LHI To New Zealand

We have left Lord Howe Island!

The last 24 hours has seen winds under 10 knots and flat seas. We have jagged a favourable current and are now doing 7 knots! I’m still counting on a 5 knot average which will get us to North Cape in about 5 days.

Day 2 of passage from LHI To New Zealand

We are now closer to NZ than Aus. Still light winds but they are forecast to increase a little today. Saw our first ship since leaving Australia at about 1:30 this morning. The AIS seen it long before we could, which is assuring.

All is well

We made it to Fiji

Love this downwind sailing and also the short passage. Zero anxiety about weather and pretty comfortable, we even managed a shower last night!

For some reason all of our entries to new countries so far have been on weekends, at least this time it’s only an overnight wait to clear.

Looks so different here with high rise ( well about 4 story) and plenty of commercial vessels and mountains!

Excited about checking out the food and city tomorrow.
