11º 18.102' S | 153º 14.532' E | Obelisk | Early departure from Rossel Island after an early morning visit by Joseph and one-year-old son, Jayden. Jayden was on shore this morning pointing at Obelisk and wondering, so Dad brought him to have a closer look. We were the first boat in two years to visit the island! Very nice village with the regional school and 300 school children making the daily trek from the out islands and mountains. Across Rossel Lagoon at 8kts avoiding easily-visible reefs, out the pass and over to Tagula Island. From there we entered Rawa Passage, a 5-mile river through the coral reefs that was just .15nm wide. David, Rosalie, Marco and Chris went up the mast for a better look, as many as three at a time. Then through Gold Rush Channel to Nimoa Island. Very close to reefs around the anchorage so a local, Donald, came out on his outrigger, hopped aboard and guided us to a safe anchorage. Visited about an hour and he left with the old speakers we had been carting around. Dinghy repair and a sundowner. -=footer | almost 10 years ago | Show |
11º 8.25' S | 152º 45.828' E | Obelisk | Short sail through the lagoon and past the Calvados Chain of islands. Anchorage at Kivi Kivi lagoon, a lagoon within a lagoon, protected from swell but quite windy at 25kts. -=footer | almost 10 years ago | Show |
11º 7.902' S | 152º 19.962' E | Obelisk | Panasia Island, wow! 1800' sheer coraline limestone cliffs and placid turquoise lagoon. A screeching sail over, a dive, a hike to the top of the cliffs and now a fire on the beach. -=footer | almost 10 years ago | Show |
10º 47.238' S | 152º 23.142' E | Obelisk | A fond farewell to Panasia this morning--surely one of the most beautiful islands in the world. After a short sail across to Deboyne Lagoon, we stopped at a 30' deep patch square in the middle of South Pass. Huge volumes of water pour through the pass and the surrounding depths are 200' or greater. Surely this must be a great dive, so we found a sandy patch and dropped anchor. The coral life and fish species were the best we have seen yet. Even the instructors in our group came up remembering that THIS was why they dive! The water above reef treated us to our first sharks (nurse and blacktip reef), turles, huge schools of barracuds, cerro mackerel, clouds of surgeon fish and squirrel fish. On the reef proper we found clown triggerfish, ribbon eels, huge plate corals and coral fans meters and meters wide, really too many species to list. The last divers came out of the water at 1700 and we headed to our anchorage at Nivani Island under full genny in 30kts following breeze. The sun was down and darkness closing in when we droppe dthe hook, thanks to help from some very accurate KAP files. -=footer | almost 10 years ago | Show |

10º 34.428' S | 151º 11.76' E | Obelisk | Ho hum, another beautiful spinnaker run from Itamarina to Slade and Butchart Islands in the Engineer Group. Caught a whopper Cerro Mackerel coming through the ships' pass of the Conflict Group and had breakfast fish, lunch fish, sushi in rice paper for tea, will have a giant fillet tonight on the grill and still had a five or six pound fillet to give to the villagers of Tubetube! We have a date to check in to customs and immigration at Alotau tomorrow morning, so we will have dinner and relax on the hook before leaving to sail the last 55nm through the night. -=footer | almost 10 years ago | Show |
10º 18.69' S | 150º 27.21' E | Obelisk | Nasty overnight squalls between Butchart Is. and Alotau but now anchored off town. Beautiful and lush high mountains behind town with striking waterfalls. Nap, Customs, Immigration and boat projects. -=footer | almost 10 years ago | Show |

9º 37.878' S | 150º 1.068' E | Obelisk | Short overnight sail from Lawadi to Boga Boga Village, Cape Vogel to dive the wreck of a B-17 Flying Fortress "Black Jack." Co-pilot Joseph Moore overshot the fringing reef in a crash landing on July 10, 1943, while returning from a bombing raid to Rabaul, New Britain Island and rests in 46 meters of water on a sandy bottom. Fully intact, the tail guns and top turret are undamaged. The nose was damaged when the plane sank to the bottom and the bottom turret crushed. Both wings, all four engines and the tail are completely present and intact. WOW! -=footer | over 9 years ago | Show |
9º 7.98' S | 149º 17.982' E | Obelisk | Calmest day since leaving New Zealand, not a breath of wind and zero swell. Motored almost entire way to Cape Nelson and Orotaba Fjord with a stop for a noontime cooling dip in crystal clear water 5000' deep. Anchored now in the shadow of towering volcanic cliffs at the head of the fjord. As always, a steady stream of canoes comes and goes. No swimming here as there are saltwater crocodiles around. Reminiscent of the Beagle Channel but MUCH warmer! -=footer | over 9 years ago | Show |

Woke up in the most beautiful anchorage, scouted The Passage a second time in the dinghy, noted the locations of submerged rocks, upped anchor and went with three people up the mast for pictures and navigation. Through with no problem then anchored on the other side only to head bach up The Passage in the dinghy to snorkel through the system of caves. From tehre it was on to Hidden Bay, a labyrinth of mangrove and jagged mushroom islands several miles square but drained by one outlet a single cable wide. Great climbing over deep water, jumping off and snorkeling. Then on to Pef Island and yet another beautiful and calm anchorage. -=footer | over 9 years ago | Show |
