2178 NM 428 Hours (17.8 Days) Average speed of 5.1 Knots Weve had the most epic crossing and were all extremely grateful to have made it to St Lucia safely. Time to celebrate, unwind and take in the Caribbean atmosphere. | over 5 years ago | Show |
14º 14.892' N | 59º 33.0' W | North Star | Yesterday We had an afternoon of variable winds fluctuating between 9 to 12
knots and the line we use for the pole guy chaffed through. The guy was easily repaired and the remainder of the day was spent relaxing and playing games - I smashed everyone at Scrabble yet again. Our night shifts went smoothly but as I was getting out of bed this morning to take over from Georgie, the boat suddenly gybed and I was up on the helm in nothing but my underwear. One of the self steering pendulum lines had chaffed through, so Marvin lost control of the boat. Only 83 miles to go now!! 24hrs Trip - 125 NM Total Trip - 2087 NM | over 5 years ago | Show |
14º 56.964' N | 57º 36.114' W | North Star | And there we go, the oven curse returns. As you all know, we had a nightmare
trying to replace our old oven. We were very relieved when we finally managed to do so in Gran Canaria. However, we have been having issues with one of the hobs on the new oven, and then yesterday, while baking some bread, the oven door exploded, sending thousands of pieces of glass all over the saloon and us! We are now back to square one with just the one working hob... :'( Apart from that minor hiccup, all else is good, and we only have 200 miles to go! 15º 29.184' N | 55º 41.85' W | North Star | We've had the perfect conditions for the last 24 hours - cruising along and
enjoying the sunshine! I jumped out my skin last night when I was attacked by flying fish on my night watch, one even ended up in the kitchen sink. Unfortunately each morning we have to clear the decks of their corpses. We've done really well on the food front, only really having to move onto tins 15 days in. Yesterday we made spaghetti meatballs which turned out rather nice considering... The winds just dropped off to 8 knots, so I'm going to run the engine for a couple of hours to top up the batteries and continue our progress. We have to make St Lucia by 1pm on Friday before the marina closes as it's Easter... 24hrs Trip - 126 NM Total Trip - 1843 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 15.678' N | 53º 43.974' W | North Star | We've had nice wind for the last 24 hours and made good progress.
We had a slight incident with the fishing rod that took it out of action for most of the afternoon. I had to take the reel apart and put it all back together but it's now back in action. Olivier made a nice apple cake yesterday which we added candles to as belated birthday cake for Georgie. We've been doing lots of research and planning our cruising around the Caribbean - the excitement is growing! Only 439 NM to go!! 24hrs Trip - 131 NM Total Trip - 1717 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 13.68' N | 51º 32.136' W | North Star | The wind picked up a little bit yesterday afternoon and was coming from 60
degrees which allowed us to push further south. We had 1 squall last night, otherwise it was a very clear and peaceful night. We put our clocks back again yesterday and made another fresh loaf of bread which turned out really well. Apart from that, all else is well onboard. 24hrs Trip - 117 NM Total Trip - 1586 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 37.956' N | 49º 35.31' W | North Star | The wind picked up ever so slightly yesterday afternoon but died down again
last night. It was no surprise that we recorded our lowest 24 hour millage of 107 NM. We're getting pushed ever so slightly north again due to the winds swinging round to 110 degrees. The wind is due to pick up later today so hopefully we'll start getting some more miles under North Star. The days are going quicker now and we're starting to get excited about our arrival which will hopefully be before next weekend. We haven't been very lucky on the fishing front. Georgie reeled in a tiny fish no bigger than her hand... I felt kind of bad, but we left it on the hook to try and catch something bigger. Which we did, but unfortunately it got away. Our last lure is only just hanging in there and it's missing one of its hooks... 24hrs Trip - 107 NM Total Trip - 1469 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 34.938' N | 47º 47.394' W | North Star | We're all very happy as we had a lovely night of sailing with no squalls! We
managed to catch up on sleep and made good progress averaging 5 knots. Unfortunately, the wind died down this morning to 8 knots, so we used the opportunity to run the engine in order to charge up our batteries and continue to make progress. This is only the second time we've needed to run the engine to charge the batteries as the wind generator has been doing a fantastic job. We put a small sail patch on the main sail where the sail batten cover has been rubbing against the inner shrouds. The wind still hasn't improved much, but as the batteries are full and we're supposed to be sailing, we've switched the engine off and we're doing about 3.7 knots in 10 knots of wind. We'll see what the wind does and maybe put the cruising shute up if there is no improvement. 24hrs Trip - 119 NM Total Trip - 1362 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 32.166' N | 45º 48.894' W | North Star | Someone up there has the squall gun's sights set on us, one after the
other, we've been getting battered - I counted at least 12 squalls last night, not much fun when you're trying to sleep. Unlike the previous couple of nights when the squalls stopped, they have continued this morning much to our anguish. We hooked a massive Mahi Mahi hat we had on the line for ages, but as we got it near the boat, one of the hooks broke and we lost it. :( We've just seen a 274m tanker, which came within a mile of us. The first proper sighting of another boat in days. Only 889 NM to go and we're now getting hit by another squall... 24hrs Trip - 132 NM Total Trip - 1243 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 30.468' N | 43º 36.732' W | North Star | We had a conveyor belt of squalls last night, finished off at 5am with the
biggest, 32 knots of wind lasting for 30 to 40 minutes. We've had a few days of cloud cover now so we're keen for the sun to come out again. The temperature is still in the mid 20's though. Today is Georgies birthday and we've passed our halfway milestone, so double celebrations onboard North Star today. Only 1015 NM to go now! 24hrs Trip - 132 NM Total Trip - 1111 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 40.524' N | 41º 24.696' W | North Star | The weather continued to taunt us yesterday afternoon, dropping off
completely so we were being overtaken by the seaweed! Thankfully, it picked up again in the early evening and we had between 15 and 20 knots all night from the East. We're back on track and making good progress again. We caught another Mahi Mahi this morning! 75cm long, so we're all very happy for the forth coming meals with more protein! We're going to make ceviche for lunch with some fresh bread and then fish cakes for dinner. Tomorrow is going to be a BIG day which we're all looking forward to. Not only are we going to make the half way mark, but it's Georgies birthday, Whoop Whoop! Having a birthday bang in the middle of the Atlantic ocean is slightly different, although I'm sure she'd still prefer to be celebrating it with her friends and family! 24hrs Trip - 115 NM Total Trip - 979 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 42.624' N | 39º 29.784' W | North Star | The anticipation of reaching our half mark is making the days longer. And we
are having variable winds at the moment which is hampering our progress a bit. They've also moved round to 110 / 120 degrees which is unlike the normal trades which are supposed to be around 80 / 90 degrees, but I'm hesitant to gybe just yet as I'm sure they'll come back round. Olivier made some fresh bread on board, which went down a treat! Georgie is going to make some flap jacks today. We all have slightly unsettled stomachs though, probably from all the fruit and veg and lack of meat. We caught another Mahi Mahi today, but it was tiny so we put it back. You've got to give the little ones a chance! We get lots of small flying fish landing on our decks at night, but they unfortunately die before we find them. Oh, we had a really interesting bird flying about the boat. They fly a huge distance to find food! It was quite large, white with a really long tail feather... Sometimes I wonder how I'd ever get by without Google. 24hrs Trip 115NM Total Trip 864NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 40.374' N | 37º 34.224' W | North Star | All is well onboard North Star. We had Mahi Mahi tacos last night which were
delish! And another similar night to before, with the wind dying down again in the early hours of the morning. When there is not enough wind to fill the sails, she rolls around a lot in the Atlantic swell and the sails / rigging makes a hell of a noise which is amplified down below - it makes sleeping a bit more difficult. Thankfully, the wind picked up again around 7am and we've been making good progress since. We're still on Cape Verde time, but the days are getting a bit out of sync with our watch system the further we head west, so we are going to put the clocks back an hour today. We've decided to do this two more times before we reach the Caribbean and we'll then be on the correct time when we arrive. 24hrs Trip - 126 NM Total Trip - 749 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 39.006' N | 35º 27.0' W | North Star | We landed another Mahi Mahi yesterday evening! And a decent sized one too,
it should last us a couple of meals. . Not the best of nights, didn't make great progress as the wind died down. Then poor Georgie got soaked again during her 4am-7am watch, while on the helm, as the wind was too unpredictable for Marvin (our wind vane auto pilot). The unpredictable winds and flogging sails also meant a restless night, so we're all a bit tired this morning. We've been sat in the saloon playing cards. Our worst 24 hours sail in terms of mileage - 111NM. We're currently making over 5 knots so lets hope we have a nice sail through the night. Only 1484 miles to go. 24hrs trip - 111 NM Total trip - 623 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 53.826' N | 33º 28.44' W | North Star | We had another fun night last night, 25 knots of wind for the majority, and
fluctuating between NE and E which meant we were unable to steer our intended course, getting pushed a bit further north as we were unable to sail dead down wind with the sail plan we had. We have now polled out our genoa on the starboard side and we're goose winging down wind. We had more bites on the fishing line yesterday, we landed another Mahi Mahi but it was very small so we returned it to the sea and we unfortunately lost a bigger one while trying to get it onboard. Expecting to reach the 1/4 way mark in the next couple of hours! (4 days and 3 hours ish). We've all been good so far and haven't had a drink, but maybe later depending on how we feel to celebrate. 24hrs trip - 137 NM Total trip - 512 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 47.538' N | 31º 20.7' W | North Star | We had a nice night last night, cruising along with clear skies and a 3%
waning moon which made for amazing star gazing and phosphorescence. We caught the weirdest fish... It was about 80cm long, but with a really slim body, similar to an eel, but definitely not. It had very large teeth and we didn't want to put our hands anywhere near it's mouth in case it got one of our fingers. Unfortunately, we couldn't identify it in our fish book, but I believe it might be a barracuda (not in the book). This morning we landed a small Mahi Mahi which we'll turn into a fish coconut curry for super. The winds are slowly moving round to the east. We will think about polling out the genoa soon. Still averaging 5-6 knots. 24hrs trip - 135 NM Total trip - 375 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 49.002' N | 29º 2.148' W | North Star | Yesterday was a nice day with cruising shute and calm sea state.
Early afternoon wind picked up NE, reverted to main sail and genoa on a broad reach, occasional beam reach. Overnight we experienced a number of squalls. Wind picked up to 18-22 knots with rain and shifted to NW for a short period of time, likely localised condition by the squall. Morning came and wind changed back to a NE, about 15-20 knots. Making good progress at 5-6 knots. Rough sea state, with small swell. 24hrs trip - 126 NM Total trip - 240 NM | almost 6 years ago | Show |
16º 49.95' N | 26º 55.992' W | North Star | Left Mindelo Marina at 11:30AM on 1st April 2019. Had a good sail between
Saint Vincente and Santo Antao with 20 knots of wind. Hit the Southern tip of Santo Antao and had no wind due to the shadow of the high mountains, so used the engine for a few hours. We left the wind shadow and hit the trade winds with 20 knots of wind from the NE. Sailing with the full genoa all night we made good progress averaging 6-7 knots. Wind died off in the morning of 2nd April and we hoisted the cruising shute around 8am. Currently got 6-7 knots of wind, moving along at 4 knots.
