7º 9.612' N125º 49.2' EAzizah de NiamkokoBraving the Pakiputan Strait.

We had to take on the currents of the Pakiputan Strait today. This is the passage of water between the City of Davao, which is a real city, and the so-called "Island City of Samal", which is not really a city, but calls itself one.

A large amount of water has to pass through the narrow strait, and currents run up to 2.5 knots – the closest thing to Vancouver Island type currents since leaving Vancouver Island.

We planned to be in the Strait at slack water, as one does. But found, once we got there, there was no such thing as slack water. In fact, not only was the current running at 2 knots – not very slack – but in the wrong direction. We anchored for a while to wait for the tide to change, but it didn't. It just kept on ebbing, all the while the levels were rising.

So we weighed anchor and ploughed through, and finally anchored for the night in a lovely little spot behind Vanishing Island – only to get whacked for an hour by a squall with 40-knot winds.

Ah, the joys of cruising.

7º 0.816' N125º 43.344' EAzizah de NiamkokoOk, for those who are "following" us, this, coast-hopping part of our cruise around the world, might get a bit monotonous — but it will get more exciting next month I promise! For tonight, we're back in Malipano, mainly because more light westerlies are forecast for the Gulf and the anchorages on the east coast would all be rolly — like last night. In here, it's flat calm. So yesterday we sailed all the way over to the east coast and today we motored all the way back. Tomorrow, the Davao Narrows, and then back to OceanView Marina on Monday to fix all the things we've discovered wrong during sea trials. Which is what sea trials are for. over 8 years  agoShow

6º 41.184' N126º 5.43' EAzizah de NiamkokoCrossed the Gulf of Davao today to anchor in a little spot called Baksal Cove. It's more like a gentle indentation in the coast, than a cove; but there are a couple of offlying reefs that might, in theory, provide shelter from waves in a westerly. We'll see; there's a westerly squall forecast for tonight. over 8 years  agoShow

6º 29.826' N125º 34.848' EAzizah de NiamkokoAnchored in Talulan Bay, Davao del Sur, Mindanao. A gorgeous day today — sunny skies, 15 knots of wind, flat seas — a nice beat down the coast. This is a lovely spot, except that it's almost impossible to find a place to anchor. Like so many places in the Philippines the depth goes from 30 metres to one metre within a boat length. Fortunately the weather is settled, so we're anchored deep (but still, just a few meters from the end of a foot-pier serving a pretty little village).over 8 years  agoShow

6º 36.042' N125º 24.594' EAzizah de NiamkokoA little motoring, a little gentle sailing in an easterly breeze (beam reach), down the Davao Gulf coast to Malalag Bay – a large bay that in previous times would have made a fabulous anchorage and nice destination, but now is home to about 50 smelly, ugly fish farms occupying all the former small-boat protection. Recently the anchorage was also home to a fleet of crude oil carriers that had nothing else to do during an international oil crisis. Tonight there are two oil tankers, an LNG carrier, and a number of deep-sea fishing bancas parked in the bay – in addition to the fish farms. It's a stop, along the coast, but not a "destination". over 8 years  agoShow

7º 1.824' N125º 34.386' EAzizah de NiamkokoA quick motor over to the Davao City side of the Gulf to Seagull Beach Resort, and a wonderful welcome. Anchored off the beach and the heliport! over 8 years  agoShow

7º 0.828' N125º 43.41' EAzizah de NiamkokoOf course, JUST as we were about to try to thread our way through the complex maze of reefs to get to the anchorage, the wind came up to 25 knots, from behind, and the hydraulic steering crapped out. A quick refill of hydraulic fluid and some fun manoeuvring under sail and it all worked out. And here we are in a lovely anchorage with (surprise!) karaoke coming at us from the shore. over 8 years  agoShow
