18º 27.558' N66º 5.658' WYemayaWe've been anchored in San Juan harbor for about 2 1/2 weeks now. We've done some great things: hiked in the rainforest, saw the festival Santiago Apostal in Loiza, went flying with our friend Matt in his little Cessna(!!), bike riding and walking through amazing Old San Juan...Life is still challenging with home schooling, big life decisions, finances, boat work, and THE HEAT. But we are persevering and enjoying the experience. Love to all. over 6 years  agoShow

18º 23.322' N65º 35.742' WYemayaWe've been doing more usual comms with email, what's app, etc. Even telephone! Apologies to friends and family following us here. Here's a summary: We spent a few weeks doing school, sorting out comms, boat work and enjoying time with new friends on St. Croix. Then to Culebra and Culebrita, Puerto Rico, for some Great snorkeling and sight seeing. On to Fajardo, PR, where we checked out some marinas and took a day trip to San Juan. (Thanks Jim, Stacey, Lauren, and Marlene!) We are now quite near Fajardo at Cayo Icacos, where we just swam with Manatees! Just after, a gazillion tour boats showed up, so lucky timing for us. Tomorrow we're going to sail to San Juan, stay put for a bit and work on future plans. Love to all. Destination: San Juan, Puerto Rico PS We just added in the previous waypoints. Now we're back up to date!over 6 years  agoShow

17º 45.072' N64º 41.982' WYemayaWe just goodbye yesterday to our dear cousins, aunt, uncle and siblings of the Padrnos clan, after a great visit on St. Croix! Lots of paddling, eating, good conversation, hiking, catching up, and of course, snorkeling! It was sad to say goodbye but so good to see them in this environment so different to our usual meetings in Colorado winter! We hope to be underway again on Saturday or Sunday. All is well. 15º 17.25' N61º 22.662' WYemayaWe've been struggling with internet the last few days, so are back to, 'less in touch.' Yesterday morning we made a fast passage to Dominica. It is really cool here. Much less European, more Caribbean (?), i.e., less infrastructure, still lots of old buildings, many modernized and used. The people seem a bit reserved at first but are super friendly when once a kind conversation is started. They've branded this 'the nature island,' or something like that, and people are enthusiastic to let you know. Hot springs at the beach, a hot waterfall, boiling lake, narrow canyons with swimming holes and waterfalls as you climb up, and super green! People also keep reminding us 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was filmed here. Some part of it anyway. We wish we had more time but we'll see what we can. It seems like a great place to come back to. almost 7 years  agoShow

14º 44.328' N61º 10.668' WYemayaIts been a long day of rain anchored off St. Pierre. This used to be Martinique's main city but all 30,000 people were killed in one go in the volcanic eruption of 1902 (except one prisoner in the jail, so the story goes).Tragic history notwithstanding, it's a quaint, touristy town today, with the usual live bands at night. Martinique likes live music! We arrived yesterday after a short sail from Fort de France. There was minor drama at the end as our engine started to overheat. After diving over to check the water input we decided to have a look at the impeller and sure enough, it was shredded. Azalea was a star handing me tools and getting the last few chunks of old impeller out of the water inlet. After an hour or so delay, we were back on our way and anchored along the narrow shelf mid afternoon. Gotta love short day sails! almost 7 years  agoShow

14º 35.97' N61º 4.182' WYemayaHere's the latest: We spent about a week at St. Annes including a great beach birthday with friends for Ezra; next we went to Le Marin to see friends, get fuel, parts, work on the boat a little more, food, etc.; next back to St. Annes (phew! much more pleasant environment) for two more nights and goodbye for now to friends from Saltbreaker and Peregrine ; then two nights at the lovely Grande Anse, snorkeling, hiking, watching live music, soaking up the vibe; today, we dropped anchor at Fort de France. We are loving it so far. The small anchorage is right near the heart of the city (rolly when the ferries go by). Old, beautiful buildings, large and small; lovely, friendly people, great food, walk streets...we are loving it! Oh I said that already, huh? We hope to hike the volcano and take some drum lessons soon!

14º 26.19' N60º 53.262' WYemayaSorry this did not send upon arrival here... We made it!! Martinique!! We are happy and proud and occasionally overwhelmed with how nice it is here. This is France so wifi and ATMs work and there is amazing food, all with a relaxed, "island style" feeling. We will hang out here for a few days or weeks and then decide which way and how fast to move. We are so grateful for all the amazing help and support we've received in South Africa, from fellow cruisers, even in Namibia, st Helena and Ascension. Amazing, kind people really are everywhere. We are trying to pass on the favors and the love. Stay tuned and as we get familiar with the internet situation we will do our best to be in better touch. Bye for now. 12º 4.89' N58º 46.842' WYemayaStill due to arrive tomorrow, morning, mid day or night depending on our speed. The current should turn more in our favor as the day wears on. All is well aboard and it's a bit hard to believe we're almost to our first Caribbean stop! almost 7 years  agoShow

10º 33.36' N56º 42.888' WYemayaStill going well. We had nachos for cinco de mayo last night then learned from friends on the net this morning that the holiday is probably more popular in the US than in Mexico. Cruisers are quite a learned bunch! Lots of time to read on passage and some of these guys have been going for 20 years! It's a beautiful life.

8º 42.648' N54º 19.008' WYemayaWow a wonderful night of fast sailing. The rain clouds cleared and the bright bigger than half moon lit high wisps of cotton. Still fast sailing but without the rain and gusts. The sun is out this morning and we look forward to beautiful Caribbean weather. About 500 miles to go. almost 7 years  agoShow

7º 23.148' N51º 44.718' WYemayaLots of rain and strong winds all night, continuing this morning. We're making great time but ready for things to calm down a bit. 5º 53.142' N49º 14.652' WYemayaClear skies all yesterday and last night. We just came through another quick squall this morning but we've got positive current and we're making great time. I'm a bit torn about cruising past this opportunity to see the Amazon jungle (in French Guyana or English Guyana, just there on our left!) Ahh, such is life. almost 7 years  agoShow

4º 44.472' N46º 53.67' WYemayaWe had a very squally afternoon and night. This morning the sun is shining thinly behind high clouds and the squalls have abated for the time being, though the strong winds continue. We're sailing under genoa only to keep it simple during the strong variable winds during the night but if conditions continue as they are we'll get a triple reefed main back up and make a bit more speed. almost 7 years  agoShow

3º 49.242' N45º 0.948' WYemayaA drizzly but smooth and steady night. About the same without the drizzle this morning. We are about to have fresh scones for breakfast, gray skies, steamy cabin with a gentle breeze in the cockpit. Morning is the best and all is well! almost 7 years  agoShow

1º 33.018' N42º 42.558' WYemayaWe passed the equator! After some crazy, mixed up, mostly unfavorable currents offshore from the Amazon Delta, we turned back to sea just 15 nm or so and things are much better. Still struggling against the currents but things are picking up again now. Our ssb connectivity, however, has been less than stellar, especially for receiving. And it eats a ton of battery trying to connect, send and receive, only to be cut off 9 out of 10 times. Oh well, it will get better again, I'm sure, and we can run the motor to boost the batteries. Cloudy, hot weather and lots of baking, cuts our solar input and makes the fridge and freezer work hard too! At least we have lots of yummy food! almost 7 years  agoShow

0º 11.022' S41º 24.66' WYemayaAnother calm and beautiful morning. We are curving out from the coast and predicted faster current to stay away from the mouth of the Amazon. 4º 8.322' S33º 41.28' WYemayaWe are still making very good time with good steady winds. 4º 32.772' S30º 34.59' WYemayaAfter some antenna repairs we got some more weather info last night and decided to keep heading west before turning northwest toward the Caribbean. 7º 56.052' S14º 25.062' WYemayaWe're still in Ascension, and having a great time. This is a crazy, volcanic moonscape with lots of green turtles nesting, great fish and birds, and the wildest antenna network we've ever seen (It's got the BBC mid-Atlantic relay station plus US and UK millitary bases). We'll be going tomorrow or more likely Friday as we get some last provisions, do some laundry and spend some more time with friends (especially Caminante, who are bound for Sweden, not the Caribbean) before the long passage to Martinique. The pactor modem is still not working too well, but as we get closer to Trinidad, it should get better. We are very well and enjoying the easy sailing. almost 7 years  agoShow
