27º 45.552' N82º 38.052' WVivaciaAfter more than 2 months of fun filled days in beautiful St. Petersburg, Florida, involving un-ending boat work, major dentistry, and plenty of good times exploring and seeing friends and family, we are finally heading to sea tomorrow. First stop, Dry Tortugas, then starting up the east coast of the US to see how far we can get before cold weather chases us south again. about 6 years  agoShow

28º 24.468' N80º 44.85' WVivaciaAfter 3 days at sea and one in the ICW we made it to Port Canaveral Boat Yard's Scorpion Marine for a much needed bottom job and some other work. Cha Ching! The timing of our passage here couldn't have been better. From Cape Fear Marina we had to leave at 10AM, catching the only morning opening of the nearby bascule bridge. This happened to fall at high slack on the day we wanted to leave, resulting in a good push all 26 miles to the ocean. Our three days and nights at sea were under a mostly clear sky, full moon, and following wind and seas. That is, until the 3rd day when the wind turned, the seas got confused, and we weren't nearshore enough to avoid a knot of gulf stream current against us. So instead of bouncing and slogging all the way to Port Canaveral we slowed way down overnight to duck into the ICW at New Smyrna Beach just at first light, then did another 36 miles south before stopping at the NASA Causeway Bridge. Going inside let us get fuel, water, pickle the water maker, and get a good nights sleep before traveling the last 15 miles to the haul-out today, just a day later than we had figured. We should have planned it this way in the first place!over 6 years  agoShow

34º 15.06' N77º 57.09' WVivaciaVivacia 2 has been patiently waiting in Wilmington, NC while Alan and I flew to San Diego and then to La Paz to visit friends and family for Thanksgiving. We even got to visit with Vivacia 1 and hang out with her wonderful new owner, Doug. Tomorrow we start a 3 day ocean passage about 400nm to Port, Canaveral Florida where we will haul out for a new bottom paint job and other projects, including a difficult alignment issue. Our fingers are crossed for seeing a space launch while we are there. Farkwar has unfortunately changed it's practice of automatically capturing only one waypoint per day from a Delorme (now Garmin) tracker to capturing four, and those are consecutive as opposed to two every 12 hours which would be not quite as bad. So apologies for the 3 extra emails per day as we drop breadcrumbs every 4 hours, which is the lowest automatic frequency possible. over 6 years  agoShow
