12º 31.152' N70º 2.25' WUbuntuHello everyone, Friday morning at around 9:30am we arrived Oranjestad, Aruba. It had been a tiresome trip, the last night was no different, against big wind, big waves and current we decided to motor up the last 80 miles for 12 hours instead of sailing which would have taken at least 18 hours. The boat kept well under all circumstances, our strategy to use small amount of sail only, a safe approach, but it works against you when trying to sail upwind in current and swell. The whole trip was difficult because of the constantly changing circumstances, hours with hardly any wind and a late afternoon 32 knots blow that lasted several hours and created huge waves. We changed course and took shelter behind Cabo Verde. That northwestern tip of Colombia is a hard one to round. So it was a mix of sailing and motoring, against a never ending choppy swell. There were beautiful hours of sailing also and the result of arriving safely and in good harmony in Aruba more than made up for the hardship. In Aruba we settled in Renaissance yacht club, part of the Renaissance Hotel. We have rested a lot during the past 2 days and are now preparing to go around the island, no not by boat but by car. Off now to go to Renaissance Hotel's private island for some snorkeling. The shuttle boats ride straight into the hotel lobby for pick up. That's valet service! 11º 14.442' N74º 13.062' WUbuntuHello everyone, we had a good night sleep last night after arriving yesterday at 6am in Santa Marta after a 21 hour, 125 mm sail. Nice marina, right next to commercial port with direct view on large container ships etc. Sunny and hot with some light rain yesterday afternoon from building up from clouds against the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. A beautiful spot with nature parks around in the green hills and mountain range. We will not see much of it, we are preparing for our next trip to Aruba, about 300 miles, sailing at first in the shelter of the eastern peninsula of Colombia, but once we round the northern tip of Colombia exposed to the easterly trade winds that dominate that part of the Caribbean. Weather forecast is stable between 15 and 25 knots easterly breeze. That means 2 reefs in the mainsail and small headsail, taking it easy and playing it safe. People in this part of Colombia are very friendly and relaxed, in the late evening many can be found walking along the boulevard where many small stalls sell drinks and fried stuff with Mai's and queso or the like. Off to the local supermarket for provisioning. No more own fish caught ... All well and relaxed on board. Katrien and Robert over 6 years  agoShow

11º 14.46' N74º 12.972' WUbuntuArrived in Santa Marta, Colombia. Great marina in natural bay, very hot! Like Malta! All well on board, tired after a full night sailing, crossing Baranquiila port entrance and lots of wind shifts. Now in the shade on a terrace for brunch.over 6 years  agoShow

Quiet night with pole rigged genoa only and with spectacular lightning shows in the distance. A few commercial vessels now and again, all passing at a nice distance to our N.
Gave away a first lure this morning, remains difficult to get fish on board under full fail at 6 knots!
Everybody well on board, looking forward to Cartagena.

9º 22.08' N79º 58.074' WUbuntu"Not good news guys, sorry but everybody is safe and fine back in Shelterbay Marina.
15 miles out of Colon the starboard upper throud broke and disaster was avoided by quick action of the crew taking the sails down. We turned round immediately and motored back to Colon.
Wind at the time of the event was Easterly 15 knots, just nice for a good sail, but it was not to be unfortunately.

Day -2

Ubuntu crew complete, Savannah turned up last night at 17:45, just while everybody started to wonder if she got lost in Colon.
Today we started with reinstalling the new blade hub on the wind generator, this one was good.
Thereafter we cast off for shake down trials n testing crew. In a 10-15 knot breeze we sailed around the buoys along the breakwater and everybody had a chance to take the helm. Several sail changes were done.
All went fine, it was concluded that the genoa would be replaced by the Yanky to reduce sail area.
Having the kotter jib in nack up or addition depending on circumstances. After another good lunch by our Chief Cook Ludo we could rest as heavy rain had set in.
Tomorrow shopping day, Friday immigration and Saturday 20 we should be underway to Eastern Caribbean.
All well on board
