6º 21.438' N99º 40.614' ESea Monkey Well we arrived in Langkawi. I think we broke a record as well. We did a whopping 120nm ( approx. 230km) in 47 hours. That's an average of about 2.5kn or nearly 5 km/h. Don't worry we didn't get the speed wobbles. In fact at stages we where becalmed so out in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight the kids and I decided it was high time for a swim. We did plenty of jumping off the front of the boat and getting back on again at the back. With no engine it was very peaceful and relaxing but we did have to concentrate as when the boat was moving we needed to make sure it kept moving and in the right direction. When we where only 16 nm from getting to Langkawi we ran out of wind again and starting drifting backwards towards an island. We through out the anchor for a few hours until there was a bit more wind again and kept going. The final 16nm took us another 8.5 hours. We ended up hiring a car and going over to Kuah and doing our check in, this is the simplest and cheapest place to check in anywhere in Asia so far and can all be done in less than an hour. Today we took along walk up the hill to a fantastic waterfall with great rock pools and rock slides. We had a ball and then came back and chilled out. about 7 years  agoShow

7º 46.38' N98º 17.946' ESea Monkey Sometimes I look back at my dinghy racing days and think how much fun it was, the mates and the rides where awesome. Today and last night I was looking back at it from a different point of view. A "thank f#*% I learnt to sail very well" point of view. As we had no engine we have been having to sail the boat everywhere even onto the anchor in a tight anchorage with the wind coming straight down the middle. We where ducking underneath cruising yachts and having to squeeze over the top of mega yachts. I am sure some of them where shitting themselves and wandering what are these idiots up to. But we made it here safely without incident apart from the fact that with no engine and not much sun we haven't been able to charge our batteries very well. So last night we had the chart plotters, depth sounder, compass, autopilot and all navigation lights turned off. It looks like the batteries have now collapsed, so we are going it the old style way. Anyway here at Nai Hairn bay Phuket we can get some money and food and a new battery and some rest and be ready for the next lot of wind to get us back to Langkawi Malaysia. over 7 years  agoShow

9º 25.53' N97º 53.622' ESea Monkey Well after having a fantastic time at Ko Phayam it was time to make a move. The moving was going to be awfully slow from now on until we get back to Penang. It's sailing for us all the way from anchor to anchor and no anchor winch. The engine has called it a day for the moment and I can't fix it. I have had the heat exchanger, raw water pump, fresh water pump, exhaust elbow and exhaust manifold all off and try and work out the problem. I have managed to get grease from a'hole to breakfast trying to sort the problem but with no luck. We are now relying on Sarah's least favorite sail (the spinnaker) to trundle us along to our next anchor point. We made it through to the Surin Islands, what a beautiful place pristine beaches, clear water and no rubbish. But guess what, you are not allowed on the beaches. Well we didn't know this and you aren't allowed to make fires either. But guess what else. We did both. So you know what happened, we got our pictures taken and then got reported to the park ranger. We copped a fine for the Conrad's and us. Eventually after a long period of time of emptying our wallets and sitting and waiting, we paid 3500TBT about 140AUD. With all the rules for the park I can't quite work out why anyone really goes there because theoretically you can't go ashore apart from at the rangers station. Anyway, we will have to find another place to let off the last of our crackers. over 7 years  agoShow

9º 45.66' N98º 24.282' ESea Monkey Well this is officiallly pretty close to our favorite stop since leaving Australia. We have had many absolutely fabulous stops but this place has been amazing. The people are very friendly, the food is reasonably cheap and tastes fantastic compared to most other places. The vibe is so chilled out sometimes you have to wake the bar staff up to get you your drink and it's cool to send your 8 year old to get you the next Mojito and there aren't many tourists at all. The water is pretty clear and a lovely temperature. Two days ago we got a massive cod from a local fisherman and managed to have left overs after feeding 9 of us. We had birthday cake from another cruising family who's son had his 5th birthday. We sit at the hippy bar and watch the sun set. The hippy bar is something you would expect to see in Pirates of the Caribbean Dave Jones' Locker. Google it "hippy bar Ko phayam". It has to be one of the best buildings I have ever seen. The imagination to create this is awesome. All built with drift wood and tsunami junk. We can sit there and stare at Myanmar as well. Anyway tomorrow we leave for the Surin Islands for 4 days and then head back to Phuket. over 7 years  agoShow

9º 13.206' S98º 18.066' ESea Monkey Well a little change in plans that we had a shortish day. The wind started to pick up on the nose again so we decided to take a scenic route. We went in a river entrance and the followed it northfor about 15nm. It reminded us a lot like the Hinchenbrook channel in northeast Queensland. Stopped at the end just before it exited and dropped anchor. The kids and franz and I went for a swim the water was a bit cooler with very strong current. Syd seems to have some attraction to jellyfish as she got done again very Badly around her foot and ankle and also her wrist and arm up to her elbow. Anyway, she's alright, it was pretty painful but she seems ok now. The little bastards are still stinging her but she's not to concerned. over 7 years  agoShow

8º 34.464' N98º 13.164' ESea Monkey Had a very slow and painful day. Left Phuket early with the intention of doing an overnighter to get to the Myanmar border. The going was so slow into a headwind with Chop that we stopped early and spent the night in a river inlet hiding with our tails between our legs. For long periods our average speed was just over two knots. Hop the next stretch will be better. over 7 years  agoShow

7º 45.0' N98º 45.954' ESea Monkey So we had two nights at Ko Phi Phi, the weather turned out to be really shitty for 2 days so we stayed in our nice comfortable anchorage and enjoyed the peace and stability of not rolling. I still got up a couple of times and watched out for the catamaran that seemed to be reanchorimg every few hours as we was consistently dragging anchor. We went ashore in the pouring rain and thought we might have a quiet time on the island with the amount of rain. Well we had a great walk all over the place and ate some very nice Thai food. After the walk sarah, Franz, Indi and I went off and had massages and then followed this up with coffee'S, cakes and for Indi pizza. Turned out to be a nice despite the weather, the lack of heat was a welcome brake. We enjoyed just sitting around and watching the world going on around us. All the westerners thoroughly enjoying their buckets of spirits or beer and looking like they had seen better days. We enjoyed the really bad singing and where relieved when we where back at the boat and not standing in front of the speakers for the party. over 7 years  agoShow

7º 44.928' N98º 45.996' ESea Monkey After another bloody rolly night we cracked the shits and left early. We found a nice island on the way and decided to stop for a sleep for a few hours. After 1 1/2 hours we got annoyed by another park ranger and asked for national park fees. So we said "HELL NO" and got moving again. We have now anchored at Ko Phi Phi and just made it in time before the mother of all storm fronts came through. Anyway all went well and we hope to have a good night. over 7 years  agoShow

7º 21.564' N99º 17.514' ESea Monkey After leaving early and heading off to Ko Muk to catch back up with the Conrads, we arrived at the cave and were greeted by the National Parks officers. We didn't even have our anchor down and they where wanting us to pay THB400 for the provelidge of anchoring. This was after we paid THB900 18hoirs prior as we where at another island. I told them that I wasn't going to drop my anchor and wouldn't be paying. We went around the corner to the resort and anchored there and all was ok. Franz, Sarah,Indi and I went for a walk to the village, it was about 2.5 km. It was very nice and a slow vibe on the island. We found a restaurant on the way and decided to have dinner there with everyone. So after swimming, having sundowners and finishing off making my bread we went to the restaurant for dinner. We got there by abit before 7 and ordered our drinks and our food. By 9 we still hadn't eaten and where sick of watching all others arrive with groups of 2-4 and get there meals and pay and leave before us. A few words were said and we where assured that they would get onto our meals straight away. The kids meals came, Sarah's came with off prawns and got sent back. Mine eventually came but by this time it was after 9.30 and we still had 3 meals missing the kids where finished and the other where sick of waiting. So we cracked the shits and put more than enough money down to cover the bill and walked off, pissed. We where on the road walking away when the husband came running after us threatening to call the police and get them to sort it out. I said that was fine and so went back to deal with the cook who was carrying on and her husband. The other people in the restaurant had been seeing the schamozel going on and went quiet and kept watching. The poor 13yr old daughter was told to sort it as mum and dad where to busy carrying on like pork chops. The came to our table and saw the money sitting there, tallied it all up and then said we paid to much. I told her it was fine and not to worry about the change. I walked off to catch up to the others who where gone. The daughter came running after me to give me the change and wouldn't accept it. Anyway. We all went back to the boat not hungry anymore after waiting so long and proceeded to fall asleep. over 7 years  agoShow

7º 12.99' N99º 3.714' ESea Monkey We left Ko Ra Wi fairly early and headed for Ko Rok Nai. We have been here before but we wanted to catch up with some friends that we went to Sumatra with, Leigh and Milky. After a longish day with a lot of good sailing we pulled up at the islands and rested while we waited for Dreamtime to arrive. There was another Morgan Out island yacht like ours but a 51footer on a mooring. The owners had left the boat and gone for a snorkel. While they did this I watched them snap there mooring and start drifting off to an anchored catamaran. It was only about 5m away from hitting when a local boat came and quickly tied a tow line to it and dragged it into deep water. They then had to wait for the owners to come back from there snorkel before they could let go. Leigh and milky came over abit later a we had a great catch-up over some snacks and drinks. over 7 years  agoShow

6º 32.85' N99º 14.286' ESea Monkey We had a very cruisey day getting from Ko Lipe to Ko Ra Wi. Had a friend recommend going here and right he was. The anchorage was a bit rolly at night as we tend to roll a lot. For any of you that don't know what that is, it's like trying to sleep in a giant hammock that has no sides so you can fall out. While you are trying to hang on in your sleep you are listening to the plates, cups, books, onions, condiments, cordial bottles, laptops, iPads, knives, forks, boom, oranges, cables inside the mast and anything else that literally hasn't been bolted or screwed in place slightly adjusting its place every 2 seconds, as it to say that they are not comfortable sleeping on that side. Anyway it was only the sleep that wasn't great. We went with the Conrads less Franz and Syd (they had the bug now) to shore. We found a fresh water creek and decided to try and track it up the hill a bit and find some rock pools to muck around in. First off we tried a walking track we found. Pretty over grown not to many people go there I think. Some how I got sent up the front to find all the spots where there where ants. The bastards had enormous nippers and got lock jaw. Some times I found them by having up to 10 of them stuck on me. I them would jump around like an idiot laughing slapping my feet trying to get them off. Shit they hurt. Indi got done as well and froze in the middle of a nest, only to move by me yanking him out of there. Max got stuck on the other side and froze up. Saying that he just couldn't do it anymore. So some fool had to go and piggy back him through the nest. I'll let you guess who the fool was. After this we went and found the pools and had a great times for a couple of hours. We will be going back even if it is only as day stop the water and creek was just superb. over 7 years  agoShow

6º 29.148' N99º 18.186' ESea Monkey Happy new year to all. Hope you all had a great New Years. Ours was not short of adventure (surprise, surprise). We anchored in the small main bay of Koh Lipe Pattaya beach. We arrived fairly early and got our check in into Thailand sorted and then went for massages. It was a great day and we had managed to sail from Langkawi all the way. The bay was nice and protected but it was busy. Later that night while we where over on Conrad for New Years drinks the wind changed direction and we then started to have swell coming into the anchorage and it was very rolly and not comfortable at all. By about 9.30 we had had enough of this and then went back to sea monkey where we proceeded to pull up the anchor and relocate to another anchorage. We went straight over the other side of the island where there was a nice breeze and flat water. By this time we had all had enough and decided to go to sleep after watching some tv. It turned out to be be a crappy night for me as I picked up Indi's bug and ended up with vomiting and diarrhea. Anyway hope you all had a great night and all the best for the new year. over 7 years  agoShow

6º 19.212' N99º 50.382' ESea Monkey Well we had an easy day where we only did about 20nm from Pulau Raya to Kuah Langkawi. It was quite pleasant sail but still had the motor running as it was pretty tight to windward and we needed to charge the batteries. After arriving in Kuah we quickly got the dinghies ready and headed off to shore. We needed a few supplies and cheap alcohol. Indi and I also got some new shorts and we did our checkout. The whole lot customs, immigration and harbour master went slow for Langkawi but still only took 1 1/4 hours. Had a great local lunch and then really nice Indian for dinner. over 7 years  agoShow

6º 3.9' N100º 2.574' ESea Monkey Had a good night at Pulau Raya. After 4 weeks in the marina I had an inch thickbarnacles on the propeller. After half an hour of scrapping all was good. We all had a good swim with the kids from both the boats doing plenty of snorkeling. over 7 years  agoShow

5º 27.486' N100º 19.02' ESea Monkey Well we have made it back to Penang. All together again. Sarah is going well now that she is out of hospital. We had a lot of time where we had current against us but Steve who came and helped me and I managed to have a great time catching up. So now it is time to rest up for about 4 weeks before our friends from Conrad come and we hit the road again. over 7 years  agoShow

5º 53.022' N95º 19.32' ESea Monkey Arrived in Sabang last night after 2 nights non stop. All went well. Watched a lot of movies and started the walking dead TV series again. 2º 4.104' N97º 20.874' ESea Monkey Arrived in Calm Bay 4 days ago and just took it easy. None of us were 100% so we just rested mainly. Had our friends from Dreamtime arrive 2 days ago so have been out exploring all through the mangroves. Racing each other through the little creeks. Quite often we had to duck branches and fallen trees, quite often there where trees just under the surface. One of them we didn't notice until it was to late and the kids and I went flying through the air as the whole dinghy got launched skyward. We took Leigh's brothers drone out and went looking for monkeys to feed bananas with from the drone but couldn't find any. 1º 37.188' N98º 35.058' ESea Monkey Well after a long day leaving at 4am we arrived at 6.30 last night to an incredibly quiet and pretty anchorage. The whole day had been rain and little wind mostly from where we wanted to go. We ended up anchoring in 32m deep and this was only about 100m from the edge of a reef. After the long day and tiredness we didn't really feel like going to find anywhere else that was maybe shallower. We had a fantastic night and left at 8.30 this morning to go through to the village of Sibloga. So we managed to clear out of the hospital yesterday after 6.5 hours but that messed up our plans to get back to Sarah and Indi and we missed our flight. So we spent the night with a friend on her boat and managed to catch up quickly with many friends. We left the boat early in the hope of being able to string the flights together to get all the way back at a reasonable time. But sometimes it all goes to shit. We managed to make it to Medan and now we are sitting in an airport hotel for the night. We have managed to get an early flight so hope to get back by lunch. Will be good to see Sar and Indi and we know they will be happy to see us after there adventures of recent. 3 nights ago they went out for dinner with some friend and as they went to leave the restaurant some local came at them with a knife. Sar and Indi ran back to the restaurant while Milky ran the other way. Leigh from Dreamtime kept the knife man occupied so that the girls where ok. Sar and Indi also had a bit of extra entertainment in the restaurant but nothing that some screaming and yelling didn't sort out quickly. This is the first time we have had anything happen on any of our travels. This is a predominantly Christian village and you can notice the difference. It doesn't feel as comfortable or welcoming. But anyway it's all part of the adventure.

14º 39.66' N97º 1.878' ESea Monkey And then it turned to shit. Very quickly it built to 20-25kn on the nose with seas up to 4m. We did this for about 2 hours and then decided that it sucked and let's find somewhere to stop flor the night. We ended up running with it for 20nm and went to a port. Quite interesting when you know the charts aren't good you haven't researched it thoroughly and it's dark. Anyway all went well so we anchored off and started the process this morning of drying everything out.a bit of water through leaky windows that where underwater and now we have lost a few things such as GOPRO. So insurance going to get a workout. Anyway will leave here tomorrow early and head up for Sabang. over 7 years  agoShow

5º 37.038' N96º 54.558' ESea Monkey We decided to go through a sushi drive through today. And the story
Went a bit like this. We where sailing to windward hard on the nose in about 12kn of wind. 25NM from the nearest land a small 25' brightly painted boat comes racing straight for us. Big smiles on both boats we agree on the price of 2 yellow fin tuna for $5 AUD. We didn't stop they didn't stop I put the money in a zip lock bag and hand over the money and they hand over the fish. In less than than 5 mins. we had our fresh sashimi and kept going. Never once did we touch the autopilot. The fish are all cleaned and we decided to pack the trawling line away for another extended rest.
Anyway all going well we are getting closer. Seeing lots of ships and again fantastic weather.

5º 41.526' N97º 35.136' ESea Monkey Awesome night motor sailing with full moon almost as much visibility as daytime. Dodged our way through a number of small storm cells without getting any rain on the boat. Reef in and then reef out. This morning had first sight of Sumatra and are currently 27nm off the coast traveling parallel. over 7 years  agoShow

hell of a bang but all ok. Engine went well so happy with that. Will do a
brief run over tomorrow and check for anything
unusual but at the moment all looks ok.

6º 18.702' N99º 50.7' ESea Monkey Just gone through harbour master, customs and immigration ready for leaving
country. Had a little problem because we couldn't get the harbour master
clearance in Penang as they had moved office and where on holidays. But in
the end a smile sorted it all eventually.
