12º 1.908' N | 61º 45.648' W | S/V Freedom | Woot! Woot! Made it to Grenada... huge goal accomplished...God is good! | almost 6 years ago | Show |
12º 38.298' N | 61º 23.712' W | S/V Freedom | Mayreau Island, Salt Whistle Bay....stunning beach....kind locals, great anchorage, poor water quality but overall a great place. We are happy to be in the Grenadines and can feel the end of this leg of our journey coming. Only three more hops until we have reached our destination. We’ve been aiming for this goal for so long, what an accomplishment. Looking forward to the next chapter in Colorado with storing Freedom in Grenada for several months. Lots of work to be done to get her ready to store...and attempt to re-integrate into Colorado life. | almost 6 years ago | Show |
13º 57.912' N | 61º 1.428' W | S/V Freedom | Marigot bay is beautiful! Just a quick overnight pit stop on the way South. Had a great sail down here from Martinique. Saw a giant leatherback turtle off the coast of St. Lucia, thought it was a barrel or mooring ball at first. | about 6 years ago | Show |
14º 28.194' N | 60º 52.074' W | S/V Freedom | Came into St. Anne’s and Le Marin for some fuel and waiting on weather. This is by far the largest concentration of boats we’ve ever seen in one place. Large med mooring areas, mooring balls and anchorage. We had a horrible experience on the fuel dock at Le Marin, this time it wasn’t because of our bad docking. Is it rude to filter your fuel as you add it to your boat? Apparently, if it takes too long and if you do this while pushy Frenchmen wait, it is very rude. Quite an experience, I’m happy to say I didn’t loose it in front of my children nor punch anyone. We are looking to head south Sunday/Monday/Tuesday to St. Lucia/St. Vincent/Bequia. | about 6 years ago | Show |
14º 29.286' N | 61º 4.752' W | S/V Freedom | Left Les Saintes, Guadeloupe yesterday morning at 8:30am on a lovely beam reach, we planned to go all the way to Bequia (175 nm) but the squalls with lightning we encountered off Martinique had us dodging around like a game of hide and seek in the dark. We ended up making our way around but we’ were blown quite a bit off course and didn’t think we could safely make Bequia by sundown of the second day. So, we slogged to Windward to the lovely anchorage of Anse Arlen’s in Martinique. While we are here, we’ll be drying out a bit, getting some rest, looking at weather, getting some necessary chart updates, and fixing a broken main outhaul line that chaffed through then heading on short hops South. Thankful to be safe. | about 6 years ago | Show |
16º 18.378' N | 61º 47.724' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived in Deshaies Guadeloupe after a night sail (only, no motor needed) from Monserrat. Feeling like real sailors now, only real tired too. Got lucky and found a mooring ball, been enjoying the largest free, clean, and well protected mooring fields we’ve ever been in. The Grande Anse beach just North of us is stunning, the bakery in town here is fabulous, and we are leisurely awaiting our next weather window for heading toward Pigeon island and the Jacques Cousteau park South of us, and The Saints in Southern Guadeloupe. After that, we plan to hopscotch fairly quickly to Grenada. Haulout scheduled for mid May at Spice Island Marina in Prickly bay. | about 6 years ago | Show |
17º 17.604' N | 62º 43.398' W | S/V Freedom | After a few fabulous days at the island of Saba, we sailed to St Kitts. Despite being a major cruise ship harbor, we found BasseTerre a nice place to look around and grab a bit to eat and grab some groceries. We plan to take the historical and scenic train ride around the island tomorrow then onto beaches of south St Kitts and Nevis after that. Headed for Monserrat island on Sunday/Monday then onto Guadeloupe. | about 6 years ago | Show |
17º 36.984' N | 63º 15.066' W | S/V Freedom | After trying once and suffering from broken steering cables, we tried again after putting in new cable service and conduit at Charlotte Amalie and we finally made it across the anegada passage from the USVIs to Saba. Arrived much quicker than anticipated, smooth sailing and no surprises which is always good. 18 hours to do 94 miles, not bad. Staying here till Monday, then off to St. Kitts. For now we play tourist on beautiful Saba... | about 6 years ago | Show |
18º 20.328' N | 64º 55.794' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived safely in St. Thomas at Charlotte Amalie harbor. Looking to get some boat projects done, having a new solar charge controller shipped in/repair of our new outboard which seems to be leaking oil! Ug. Happy to be in a safe place for the heavy Christmas winds with good holding. | about 6 years ago | Show |
17º 53.28' N | 66º 31.728' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Isla Caja de Muertos was fabulous. We decided to take a day use mooring ball and stay all night. The island was staffed by 2 or 3 NPS rangers who answered questions when approached but were listening to music in their houses. Lots of hurricane damage from Maria here, doors ripped off the museum here, lots of new shoreline exposed. Worst thing for us was the path to the lighthouse was blocked by cactus. Being from Colorado, we at first kinda laughed when we heard this. We thought we could maybe just go around it...Ha! Nothing could be farther from the truth. The path was indeed blocked by cactus that was more than twice as tall as a grown man and with a 8 inch diameter. The thorns on these cactus were very serious and would even stab through flip flops. Needless to say, the NPS guys were right, the path was blocked by cactus. Noah caught a Spanish mackerel on the way over and made a beach campfire and roasted it to make fish tacos with S/V Clarity. The shells on the beach here were fabulous and after the tour boat of 15-20 tourists left and a 1 or 2 local boats with 5-8 people each left, we had the place to ourselves. Got up early the next morning and left for Salinas before some impending stiff weather blows in. | over 6 years ago | Show |
17º 57.972' N | 66º 37.02' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Pulled into Ponce Harbor with great anticipation only to realize this deep anchorage with marina and mooring field didn't have much protection. The trouble with a deep anchorage is that we'd need to put out so much anchor rode that our swing at anchor during the day/night would potentially make us to hit nearby boats/harbor (not good). So, after staying one night and catching up with S/V Clarity and checking out the boardwalk, we decided to shove off and head to the next destination. | over 6 years ago | Show |
17º 56.628' N | 66º 52.452' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Came into "Gilligan's Island" also called Cayos de Cana Gorda or Punta Jacinto. Due to no working dinghy motor, we anchored very close to shore and found it to be lovely. Clear water, baby fish, low crowds, great beach access, wonderful kayaking and fairly good trees and shady places for a hammock. Stayed two days. | over 6 years ago | Show |
17º 58.272' N | 67º 2.268' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Anchored in La Paguera after a calm motor-sail from Cabo Rojo. Easting along the S. coast of Puerto Rico can be treacherous. Looking forward to doing some exploring in the area, there are several reefs and a biolumenescent bay nearby. After trying to get to some of these places, our dinghy motor would not stay running and it abandoned us in several locations. Thankfully we have oars to row back. Didn't get to explore much here because of it. Found some local eateries enjoyable and devoured a plate of nachos bigger than a small child. | over 6 years ago | Show |
17º 56.448' N | 67º 11.982' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Left Punta Real for Cabo Rojo and an overnight anchorage. View of the lighthouse at sunset was amazing. This anchorage was a bit rolly and only cut 1 hour off our transit to La Paguera. I don't think I'd do this the same if I was to do it over again. I'd do the entire corner in one passage (from Punta Real to La Paguera). | over 6 years ago | Show |
18º 4.23' N | 67º 11.448' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Crossed the Mona from Samana to Mayaguez and decided to land in Puerto Real. Mayaguez isn't very protected and it is very developed. Puerto Real is very protected and quiet/simple. We anchored off Marina Pescaderia with S/V Clarity next to S/V BellaLuna. While in West Puerto Rico, we rented a car and explored Rincon to the North, Cabo Rojo and the lighthouse to the South and several fast food joints in Mayaguez. | over 6 years ago | Show |
19º 4.752' N | 69º 28.158' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) Escaped marina life for a few days to come to Los Hatises National Park in Lorenzo Bay. Very interesting and beautiful place. Great anchorage and fabulous kayaking and shore excursions. Explored a cave with Taino carvings/paintings. Played for hours in the clear water and otherwise enjoyed the crap out of this place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Haitises_National_Park | over 6 years ago | Show |
19º 11.7' N | 69º 21.198' W | S/V Freedom | (Catching up on this log...) S/V Freedom pulled into Samana and Puerto Bahia on December 12th, 2017 after leaving Luperon harbor on December 10th. Had a very mild motor sail over, very thankful for calm seas. We did run over an invisible fishing net with several marker buoys that was just under the waters surface. Had to dive on the boat in the open ocean, cut away lots of tangled ropes and bottles then continue on. Thankful this was during the daytime with plenty of space to float around while we got it sorted. Looking forward to some time at a posh marina and seeing the local sights. Came into Puerto Bahia with S/V Clarity and a few of our other friends out of Luperon already came over (Moxie, BellaLuna, UpsideUp, Kraken). | over 6 years ago | Show |
19º 54.078' N | 70º 57.042' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived in Luperon today, what a slog (170 miles, 46 hours). We had great weather and everything on the boat ran well. We had plenty of fuel to get here but one of our fuel tanks would clog each time we switched to it. After some creative siphoning, we were able to put 5 gallons into one of the good tanks from the clogged and continue the rest of the way. We are currently enjoying some cold drinks and a pollo con arroz in downtown Luperon. Next we get some sleep and refuel, add water, dump trash and old oil, and recoup a bit. If we like it here, we may stay for awhile. It looks very promising! | over 6 years ago | Show |
21º 26.286' N | 73º 3.222' W | S/V Freedom | At 7/22/2017 22:00 PM (utc) our position was 21°26.288'N 073°03.219'W
Saw the Coast Guard helicopter land on the island and circle our boat. They reminded us via radio that the island is uninhabited. Makes us nervous there are "visitors" living here. Hoping to stay here until we have a good weather window to head straight south to Hispanola then East to Luperon in the DR. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
22º 21.786' N | 72º 58.788' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived in quiet Mayaguana harbour after an overnight stopover at Plana Cays and Atwood Harbour on Acklins island the night before that. We sailed 60 miles today in 12.5 hours in heavy seas. A bit sketchy at times. Currently having some trouble with our main sail. We are in search of a sailrite sewing machine or a palm stitcher to re-attach the clew to the sail. Heading to West Caicos hopefully Friday, watching weather closely. The jib and engine (together comprising the "Iron Jib") are working well. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
23º 31.098' N | 75º 45.42' W | S/V Freedom | At 7/08/2017 10:00 AM (utc) our position was 23°31.098'N 075°45.417'W | almost 7 years ago | Show |
23º 5.874' N | 74º 57.546' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived in Clarencetown ahead of some anticipated squally weather. Lovely sail of 50 miles down here from Conception island. Groceries, laundry, and a carve tour tomorrow hopefully. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
23º 31.098' N | 75º 45.42' W | S/V Freedom | Enjoying Georgetown for a few days as we watch the weather. Hoping to head out tomorrow toward North Long Island and Calabash bay then to Conception Island, Clarencetown and Crooked Island after that. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
24º 10.434' N | 76º 46.848' W | S/V Freedom | At Staniel Cay for the Fourth of July. Fireworks are expected with great anticipation. Lovely place and weather. Hoping to head further South tomorrow and onward to to Georgetown Thursday or Friday. Fixed our issues with our main and Jin, both issues turned out to be user errors. Our dinghy motor propeller is slipping in high gear but runs ok when run at a low speed. We dove at Thunderball Gratto caves today and it was likely one of my top ten snorkel times in my life. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
24º 11.178' N | 76º 27.504' W | S/V Freedom | Freedom is anchored off Big Majors to see the swimming pigs and watch a Junkanoo festival tomorrow. Hoping to hit a few really good snorkeling spots in caves while here. Doing well, loving the Bahamas... | almost 7 years ago | Show |
25º 4.464' N | 77º 18.786' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived in Nassau, New Providence with sailing vessel Nu Trix under motor power from Chub Cay in the Berry Islands. Good to be making progress. Now to find some engine filters/belts and do some re-provisioning before we head SE to the Exumas. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
25º 24.624' N | 77º 54.684' W | S/V Freedom | At anchor at Gun Cay in the Berry Islands. Motor sailed for 14 hours yesterday and motored for 7 today to cover 115 miles to get here from Bimini. We are "Buddy Boating" with another couple (Ray and Kim on Nu Trix) who are great to learn from and fellowship with. Headed for New Providence Island tomorrow and Nassau harbour. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
25º 43.482' N | 79º 17.898' W | S/V Freedom | Arrived in Alice Town Bimini after our first passage/gulf stream crossing. Stopped into the Bimini Blue Water marina for a few days for some more engine work. We are learning what to not do daily and smiling as we go. Happy to be out of Florida, it seems to be monumental to get here. Already meeting some great people here and the kids are enjoying it nicely. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
26º 6.246' N | 80º 6.666' W | S/V Freedom | Anchored in lovely lake Sylvia in downtown Fort Lauderdale. I'm figuring out our new ham radio and finishing up a few projects while on the hook. Memorial weekend was wild, lots of boats but we met some cool families and enjoyed some fellow kid- boat company. I even celebrated my 39th birthday with new friends. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
26º 13.392' N | 80º 6.042' W | S/V Freedom | Doing well, surrounded by 1,000's of boats here in the floating waterways of Fort Lauderdale. Some boaters are kind, some are not. Tomorrow we are getting a Side-Band/Ham Radio then heading south to Miami for staging to cross the gulf stream. Getting very excited to get offshore! | almost 7 years ago | Show |
27º 28.134' N | 80º 19.398' W | S/V Freedom | Anchored out in the Fort Pierce inlet area for a few days while we await a new coolant hose needed for the engine. We solved the windlass slipping issue solved and engine charging problem and did a test day sail today. Mojo wasn't too sure about the rolly seas but he really enjoyed going ashore later in the day. Looking to leave Fort Pierce soon after getting the hose and heading south. We walked to a nearby McDonalds for free Wifi and ice cream to send this update and do some chart updates and Netflix downloads. | almost 7 years ago | Show |
28º 37.122' N | 80º 48.426' W | S/V Freedom | First position in Farkwar, we are on the hard at Westland marina while we get a rebuilt engine installed, paint job, and various projects around the boat. Came in in mid/early February, hoping to leave in early April. | about 7 years ago | Show |
